Viking Ship Museum
Norway's Viking Ship Museum (Vikingskipshuset) is situated in the Museum of Cultural History of the University of Oslo. The historical museum exhibits include the ships Oseberg, Gokstad, and Tune. Also on display are artifacts from the Borre mound cemetery. The Viking Ship Museum was first conceived by Swedish professor Gabriel Gustafson in 1913. The professor proposed the university host a separate building to house 19th and 20th Century Viking artifacts. During this time, the university was already in possession of the Gokstad and Oseberg ships. Arnstein Arneberg won the contest held to determine the structure's architectural design. The first hall, for the Oseberg ship, was completed in 1926 with funding from the Stotinget. The halls for the other two ships were completed in 1932 after delays occurred during World War II.
