Stave Church interior

Norway his home to a majority of the stave churches still in existence. Built of wood, a stave church is a medieval church that features post and beam construction similar to timber framing. The interior walls of a stave church are made of vertical planks. The style of the stave church is an evolution of Germanic paganism. The interior tends to be very meticulous and elegant. This is in part due to the Viking's technique and tradition of wood carving that they relayed into the designs of their churches. It is believed that at one point, Norway hosted nearly 2.000 stave churches. Today, there are 29 historical stave churches still standing in Norway.
